Another fun weekend, full of Milwaukee-based goodness! This past week included visits to Milwaukee Public Library‘s “honor system” used-book sale at the Public Market, the Winter Farmers’ Market, the Hawkins clock-center in West Allis, and a production of “The Marriage of Bette and Boo” at the Boulevard Theatre.
The Milwaukee Public Library (the central library picture below, with its decorative push-doors and exterior Corinthian columns) has come up with a neat way of moving out their no-longer-in-cirulation used-books. The books are placed on wheeled carts at the Public Market and put up for sale at $1/each, payment based on the honor system! Very clever! The Market is a popular place for downtown lunching, so I can see how this site was a good choice for the honor book-sale. Way to go MPL!
Rachel and I made many visits this past summer to the West Allis Farmers’ Market for fruits, veggies and other goodies provided by local producers. Winter was not looked forward to, if only because of its signifying the end of the farmers’ market season. Now, thankfully, even winter can’t stop the farmers’ market! The Winter Farmers’ Market, held at State Fair Park, was very, very busy with consumers buying meats, veggies, pasta, and baked goods. It was great to see how busy it was!
To do some Christmas shopping, Rachel and I paid a visit to the Hawkins Clock Center, on Greenfield Avenue. For over 40 years, the Hawkins’ have been selling, repairing and making beautiful clocks. It was a very neat store to go into, just to see the sheer variety of clocks on hand–from small desktop time-pieces, to cuckoo clocks, to grandfather and anniversary clocks, and wall clocks.
On Sunday, Rachel and I made it to the Boulevard Theatre’s production of “The Marriage of Bette and Boo.” This play, a very, very dark comedy about dysfunctional relationships, played to a packed house. It was a unique experience for me, as wedding photographs from my portfolio were the backdrop against which the actors performed.
This weekend again proved to me how special the metro-Milwaukee area is–such a variety of interesting things happening!
