Milwaukee LikeMind notes: Jim Raffel

I recently attended my first “LikeMind” meeting at the Walker’s Point Bucketworks.  LikeMind is a monthly networking meeting for people interested in social media, technology, creativity, art, and culture.  Anyone can attend, there is no cost and the value of each is proportional to the interesting people who attend!

This meeting began with a presentation by Jim Raffel on how a blog can be the “home base” for your brand, whether that brand is backing a product, service or person.  Here are the notes I scribbled down while listening…

  • make your blog attractive to search engines
  • work ahead on your blog, so that you can observe…
  • …”the 24 Hour Rule”.  Write your blog, let it sit, come back to it and review before publishing.
  • any little change you can make to the blog will likely improve its reception by your audience
  • write your blog with keywords in mind
  • responses to your blog can be a “measure” of sorts to your company’s engagement in the social realm
  • “writing is the doing part of thinking”
  • if you want responses/comments on your blog, ask a question–ENGAGE your readers
  • make your lead and last paragraphs into summation paragraphs, since many people skim the body of an article
  • if you only read one book about social media, read “Social Media 101” by Chris Brogan
  • Jim’s blog is www.jimraffel.com

It was a pretty fun meeting, as I saw so many familiar faces–Brain Mayer, Sue Spaight, and Jeff Larche in particular–and because I also got to finally meet Stacy Snook.
