Today’s LikeMind meeting featured a presentation by Mike Rohde on the topic of his “sketchnotes”. Rohde had been a voluminous note-taker and realized that taking copious amounts of notes didn’t always aid his processing of the lectures/presentations/and such that he attended. Mike started taking notes at lectures in the form of sketches as a way to improve his comprehension, by trying to really pay attention to key points of the presentations and bring them across in a well-designed sketch. He found creative fulfillment and inspiration in this practice and began sharing these sketches in his Flickr stream.
Soon, Mike found many people interested in his concept and wanting to try the same thing. For a moment, Mike felt a bit “territorial” over the concept of sketchnotes, but then realized that by letting ideas fly fast and furious, even encouraging other people to create sketchnotes, he would create a sort of “karmic path”. He would not be forgotten as the guy who popularized sketchnotes, but would in fact become the “go-to guy” for this style of illustration. Mike started a blog about sketchnotes–posting his and others’ sketches and building a community of sketchnote-takers. That approached proved correct and Mike has become very popular and sought out for his design and illustration work.
For lots of great notes at today’s presentation, search “#MKElikemind” at Twitter! Jamey Shiels and “Bootyp” both posted lots of notes!
The crowd at today’s meeting was filled with all the “usual suspects” and hosted at Bucketworks. I’m looking forward to the next MKE-Likemind program on September 17, also at Bucketworks.
In keeping with the program’s theme, and in fondness for comicbooks, I made a “sketchpage” about the presentation. 🙂
