Recent outings: local economy, environment

In the past week, I’ve have two outings worth mentioning. This past Friday, I volunteered half a day at the Green Energy Summit, held at the Frontier Airlines convention center. I worked as a door monitor–giving people directions around the event, answering questions about the speaker-schedule and just being a smiling face for anyone who came by. 🙂 After my shift was done, I was able to walk through the vendor-exhibit area. It was pretty neat to see how many local companies are producing products aimed at efficiency and sustainability, and how many schools are creating educations programs to address this growing need in the marketplace. Photos below show the main speaker room and the vendor area.

On Tuesday of this week, I attended and worked the check-in table at the Annual Meeting our Our Milwaukee. Our Milwaukee is the trade-group I belong to that seeks to educate Milwaukee consumers about the value that can come from supporting locally-owned and operated businesses. OM has now grown to 180 community-supporting businesses!  There’s an amazing variety of businesses too: Belland Boo (selling fair-trade baby products), The Fast Foodie (serving AMAZING Globacos!)Lakefront Brewery (our host for the night), Burke Candy (making amazing chocolates and toffee), Boelter+Lincoln (a local advertising agency), Bliffert Lumber (pretty self-explanatory), the Lowlands Group (operating some great restaurants), and Knockdown Ninja (a software developer) to name just a few! I’d really encourage you, if you’re in the Milwaukee-area, to consult the OM directory before your next shopping excursion and see if you can find what you need at one of these great local businesses!
