Since July 2010, I’ve been a regular attendee of the MKE Likemind meetings. These meetings, ,held on the 3rd Friday of each month, at 7a.m. have been of varied and interesting topics–blogging, social media in the Mideast, Rock the Green, education innovations and so on. For the June meeting, the last until the fall, I was the presenter. I spoke on a topic that’s been of interest to me since I began my self-employment 10 years ago: the attempt to find personal/professional balance in a creative life.
It sounds like a weighty topic, but I did my best to keep it interesting. I spoke about the true challenge for any person, and that is to attempt making a living while also making a difference in the community. I talked about the idea that all creatives have three different areas where they need to place emphasis: on themselves, their close relationships, and their community. I put forth that creatives need to spend some time putting some portion of their energy back into their community, just as they put a lot of energy into maintaining their businesses.
For a better idea of what my presentation was about, please click the following link; just shrink the first window to make the Robert Frank quote readable, and then hit the “play” button in the lower right to advance to the next step. I admit that this is a little rough, but I hope you can find it valuable!
Here too,is a short video, produced by T* Miles Fabishak, that was made in preparation for this presentation: Troy Freund/Vimeo.
In attendance, were a number of LikeMind regulars:
