The last MKE Comicbook of 2014 happened recently, and it was a real nice way to close out the year in comics! We met at Anodyne Coffee – Bruce St., and had a fun talk about some of our favorite comics of the year, were reminded of some classic holiday-themed issues, and had a competitive trivia contest put together by Don.
First we went around the table sharing comics, and then we enjoyed the challenging trivia contest. Don did a great job on the contest – quizzing us on character and creator trivia, and some brain-twisting word-combo questions!
For the stand-out comics of the year, here is what was mentioned:
The Delinquents – a 4-issue limited series from Valiant, teaming-up Archer and Armstrong with Quantum and Woody!
Copperhead – a “space-western” of sorts
Uncanny X-Men/All-New X-Men – both written by Brian Michael Bendis, and has been pushing the X-verse in strange, interesting areas, with new and old characters.
Ms. Marvel – Marvel’s appropriately much-lauded Muslim-American teen heroine
All New X-Factor – Peter David’s continuing tales of a team he’s been writing for many years
Cyclops – “estranged son and father outer-space road-trip”
Spiderman 2099 – more Peter David greatness
Moon-Knight – some innovative ideas and unique story-telling methods to make “Marvel’s Batman” stand out; written by Warren Ellis
Letter 44 – an interesting sci-fi tale from a very busy writer, Charles Soule.
Detective Comics – putting the “world’s greatest detective” back into Batman stories
Ducks – an online sketch comic in 5 parts.
++Holiday-themed books that were mentioned…
Uncanny X-men 143 – the classic “Kitty Pryde versus N’garai monster” issue
Superman 462 – written by Paul Chadwick, a great reminder of the importance of looking out for each other
++two comics that got mentioned as BAD comics of 2014: “ShadowWalk” and “The Star Wars.”
