…The May MKE Comicbook meetup was one I was looking forward to. In the comicbook world, there has been a lot of discussion about the need to diversify, in terms of creators and characters, the comics being published. As this night’s topic was “Your Favorite Female Creators and Characters”, I was pretty excited to see what people were going to share.
Kate:
+Lumberjanes – “about a group of girls, and they’re at camp – and they fight yetis!” By Grace Ellis, Noelle Stevenson, and Brooke Allen. Kate declared “it’s a joyful adventure!”
+DC’s “The Outsiders” while it was never sold as a “women’s superteam”, the team was never less than 50% women. Fave of the bunch – Grace Choi, “such a tough woman character.”
+Ms. Marvel – the ultra-popular Muslim-American superstar, written by G. Willow Wilson!
Shawn:
+A-Force – “I enjoyed the first issue and will probably pick up the second.” This title features most of Marvel’s big-name female heroes, and is also written by G. Willow Wilson!
+New 52 Batman, Vol. 6 – the character of Bluebird
Don:
+No Mercy -“looks like a ‘fun book’, but is actually pretty dark.” Created by Alex De Campi, Carla Speed McNeil, and Jenn Manley Lee.
+Wonder Woman: The Hiketeia – just a great WW story!
+Orbiter – drawn by Colleen Doran, a great sci-fi story
+Nowhere Men – colored by Jordie Bellaire
Molly
+Birds of Prey, written by Gail Simone. Kate gave a short monologue on why Oracle is so great for comicbooks and women in general.
+Death: The High Cost of Living, written by Neil Gaiman, featuring the personification of Death, as an awfully neat young woman.
+Captain Marvel, by Kelly Sue DeConnick and Emma Rios – great female characters
Rose:
Page by Paige – a book about a 16y/o girl who wants to be an artist. By Laura Lee Gulledege
Scott:
Bitch Planet – amazing sci-fi, written by the previously-mentioned KellySue DeConnick!
SAGA – art by Fiona Staples, and a great lead female character.
Melva
“Can’t We Talk About Something More Pleasant” by Roz Chast, a graphic novel about the author’s experience with her aging parents.
Jeff
“The Thrilling Adventures of Lovelace and Babbage” by Sydney Padua – historical-fiction about the woman who basically created computer programming.
“The Influencing Machine” – by Brooke Gladstone – a graphic novel about the history of media and where it’s going.
Emilio
Tank-Girl – a classic female character who hardly needs any introduction…
Persepolis -by Marjane Satrapi, showing a very human portrayal of life in Iran.
Power Pack – 80s Marvel, written by Louise Simonson and drawn by June Brigman.Great take on the siblings-with-superpowers!
Elfquest – classic fantasy series from Wendy and Richard Pini.
Me
Nothing Could Possibly Go Wrong – drawn/written by Faith Erin Hicks and Prudence Shen. High school drama, battle-bots, scary cheerleaders, and dealing with your parents’ divorce.
Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E.– light-hearted superheroing by a girl (with a super-power-imbuing belt) and her step-dad (in a robot suit).
New 52 Wonder Woman – an amazing representation of the character, written by Brian Azzarello.
