MKE Comicbook: July 2016: HERE COME THE VILLAINS!

 (click ’em to big ’em)

The July MKE Comicbook focused on a topic we haven’t covered before – the villains of the comics we read! And to make it even a bit more unusual, Don had each person draw a card from “Cards Against Humanity”  and share how that random card might relate to a comicbook they brought!

Amber drew “civilian casualties” and related that to an old issue of Spider-Man that featured, basically, some proto-cosplayers who had formed a fan club for the Sinister-Six.

“M. Night Shyamalan plot twist” was compared to an issue of Fantastic Four wherein Doc Ock tried to be a good guy, and develop a friendship with Reed Richards, but because comics value a status quo in their characters, that didn’t last long at all, and soon Otto was back to his villainous ways!

The third version of Batman’s villain, Clayface, fit with the card “villains in love” for his story where he falls in love with a mannequin (there’s also a Penguin story that uses ALL the bird puns you could imagine).

Emilio pulled the card “altar boys”, and appropriately shared a biographical comic about JFK, and a comicbook version of Faust!

I shared an issue of a WildC.A.T.S. arc where the team has to deal with a serial killer in a final way that suited my drawn card of “growing a pair.”

Jony drew the card card “heartwarming orphans” and thought that went appropriately with the Uncanny X-Men Annual #12 where Mojo created the X-Babies! She also shared an issue from the X-men cross-over “INFERNO”, featuring Mr. Sinister, the Goblin Queen, and Nas’tirh.

Justin shared three books of villainy – “Emerald Twilight: New Dawn”, detailing how Green Lantern became a villain; “Red Son” – an Elseworlds tale about “what if Superman’s rocket had landed in Russia?”; and “Preacher: Volume 2” which features Jesse Custer’s awful, awful family.

Luke pulled the card “giving birth to the anti-Christ” which seemed well-suited to his choice-book “Empire”, which he described as “basically what would happen if Doc Doom won (in the DC Universe). He also shared a recent Star Wars Annual that focused on the Emperor being a creepy bad-ass.

Don’s card was “mopey zoo lion” which he thought accurately described in the Kingpin in Daredevil 116. He also shared Fantastic Four’s “Trial of Galactus” issue and some great M.O.D.O.K. action from Secret Avengers.

Tariq shared a classic Image limited-series, the Spawn-spin-off, “Violator” (and also gave us all a chuckle at featured character in the book, “The Admonisher”! Sharing another character closely associated with Spawn’s creator, Todd McFarlane, Tariqu showed off the first issue of “Venom”, where the Spider-Man villain does he best to be a hero.

Jeff’s card was also pretty spot-on, as “battlefield amputations” pretty correctly related to the issue of Nexus he shared, where an alien race derives energy from the severed heads of their enemies!

Shawn shared two villains that were classic to him – from Marvel, the X-men villain, Sauron, because “he feeds off the psychic energy of people, and the whole part-dinosaur thing, he just always stood out for me, was my favorite. And the whole “Savage Land”” in Antarctica thing…” He also shared an issue of DC Universe Origins, filled with “one-page origin stories” and was particularly impressed by Granny Goodness.

Shawn’s son, Braden, brought a villain we could agree on: Darth Vader. Braden showed us an issue of Darth Vader, saying, “Darth Vader is my favorite villain because he outsmarted six missiles coming at him at the same time.” Well, I don’t think you can really beat that! 🙂

P.S. – in memoriam to the recently passed Muhammed Ali, someone brought in a copy of “Superman Versus Muhammed Ali” and it was AMAZING.

Again, Anodyne Coffee was kind enough to host us, and Lost World of Wonders was generous enough to donate the first prize for the trivia contest – and Luke was the night’s Brainiac to win that prize!
